As we conclude March, two thoughts continue to shape the way I view the world in what I will describe as a season of my life.
One: Love the people who love you
We are so often consumed in pursuing the love and attention of specific people, instead of pausing to receive the love and attention we are already getting from the people who love and care for us. In February and March, I have been intentional in loving back the people who love me, and paying keen attention to those who are making effort to care for me.
Simultaneously, I have got better at letting go of unreciprocal connections. Every time I find myself trying to intensify my pursuit, I ask myself: who in my life is currently making effort to connect with me, but that I am not extending the same effort towards? Then I call, text or visit them and return to them the love, care and attention that they so generously lavish upon me.
Two: Leadership is everything, and it has everything to do with you.
I am learning that to lead is to simply be the first. That is all. That means in everything, as a leader, you work the hardest, wake up earliest, stay up latest, run the fastest. You cannot lead people to where you have never been or are not willing to go.
As a leader, you set the tone, and you determine the pace at which everyone who follows you moves. It is a painful truth that if your team is struggling, it is more a reflection of your leadership than anything else. How the people you lead are, says everything there is to know about you or atleast, your leadership.
Over to you
Love and Leadership are what I have been learning in March: To be intentional about loving back those who love me, and to first and foremost lead myself before I try to get my followers to go somewhere or be something I have myself never gone or been. What about you, what are you learning and what are you learning about it?
