I want to be Born Again: a story of evangelism

One of the things I have been praying for is the joy of leading someone to Christ. After evangelising consistently for so long, I started to feel discontent about not getting any real commitments.

I was also happy to hear that people whom I had challenged about their spiritual life in the past had now given God full rein. But I now wanted to have the joy of finding someone who was ready to commit and personally lead them to Christ.

Barely a week after I made the prayer, my person came. His name? Solomon. He rides boda boda. I did not even have to preach to him. He just heard a lot of references to God in my conversation with him (I chat up all my boda boda riders), and I think that something in my conversation touched the heart of his need.

I was talking about how God places people in families to be loved and cared for, when their primary family unit is non-existent or non-functional. I told him that He does this especially through a church family. It turns out that he was the only surviving member of his family, the rest having been wiped out by death.

When I arrived at my destination, he asked me to wait so that we could talk a bit longer. He said he was tired of having to shoulder the burden of life alone—literally. Without a family to lean on, he said, he was barely hanging on.

He said that he believed everything that I had shared with him and that he wanted me to pray for him. His voice was shaking with emotion when he said that he wanted to give his life to Christ.

Just like that. No preaching, no pushing, no begging. Just a simple, straightforward request: “I have heard everything you have said and I believe it is true. Pray for me. I want to be born again.”

Meanwhile, this seems to be one of the few kinds of prayers that God is quick to answer. This, and maybe that dangerous prayer of: “God, remove anything and anyone in my life who is keeping me from growing in my relationship with you.”

But ask Him for money, a car or a husband…ho! Crickets. 👀🙄😂 (Kidding, I fully understand divine timing)

Romans 10:15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
